遊戲中玩家扮演的角色是效力於異端審判庭的審判官——為避免不必要的麻煩，遊戲採用了架
空的地域和宗教設定，但主角的使命與我們在歷史課程上瞭解到的差不多——抓捕、審訊並處
刑異教徒和女巫，其內容與地球歷史的差異在於：遊戲中的異端可是貨真價實的。

遊戲中這片名為Ultherst的土地遭受了神祇降下的三大災禍——先是饑荒，再是瘟疫，最後天
降火雨，背負罪孽與無辜的靈魂皆在這一山寨版啟示錄中受難，絕望的人們背棄了對於聖母教
會的信仰，自甘墮落，屈從於惡魔的誘惑。天災過後，王國與教會仍然倖存，審判庭為了對抗
威脅統治秩序的異端而扮演了處刑者的角色——這也是玩家需要扮演的角色。

《異端審判官》所講述的是關於背叛、折磨、瘋狂與殘忍定罪的故事。玩家可選擇的三個職業：
聖武士、牧師和盜賊（實為沒落的貴族）皆擁有各異且獨立的故事情節，在用利刃、魔法和神
跡對抗從墳墓中和地獄中爬出的邪惡勢力的同時，玩家還要抓捕並審判自己的人類同胞——收
集其罪行的證據，或是利用審判官的特權，令教會法凌駕於世俗法之上，通過中世紀的酷刑逼
供，最終親手將異端送上火刑架。在超過一百小時的遊戲流程中，玩家需要面對90種敵人、180
位NPC、超過200種武器、7大學派的80種法術——包括教會所准許的，以及源自異端的禁忌。
